In her first 100 days, Jacky will...

  • Lead the creation of a city-wide Youth Development Task Force that includes nonprofit leaders, youth, and city government officials to create a road map to a Youth Development Department.

  • Allocate $10 million in the 2017-18 City Budget to the Office of Gang Reduction & Youth Development to fund community-based and informed programs that create or sustain 50 “Safe, Supportive, Nurturing Spaces” for youth and enhance programming across the City of Los Angeles under the advisement of the Youth Development Task Force.

  • Review City of LA policies and practices to reduce current youth arrest trends and increase participation in safe, supportive, and nurturing spaces. She is concerned that the close to 10,000 youth ages 19 years old or younger are arrested annually. According to the 2014 CA Dept. of Justice arrest data, 90% of arrests for ages 19 and under are made up of African American and Latino youth.

I would create and fund a Youth Development Department to provide support and opportunities to all youth, regardless of their ability to pay or their immigration status. This would ensure that LA doesn’t fall behind the other large cities in our country.

— Jacky Vargas

I would fund local community-based organizations to create safe, supportive, nurturing spaces and innovative youth development programming for all youth across the City.

My public safety strategy will focus on partnerships with schools and communities to create engaging and accessible neighborhoods and increase spending on community based supports and opportunities for positive youth engagement and development.
